This photograph was taken after the Japanese surrendered to Allied forces, marking the end of World War 2. The entire nation celebrated the occasion, which was known as "Victory over Japan Day," or V-J Day.
On Aug. 14, 1945, Shain went into Times Square to join the soldiers, sailors and civilians celebrating the victory. She was then grabbed and kissed by an American sailor, whose identity remains unknown even to this day.
The photo, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, was picked up by Life magazine and would come to represent the spirit of the United States in the wake of an Allied victory.
